WHAT'S THE SMS?
Located in the Information Commons on the 1st floor of the Kent State University Library, the Student Multimedia Studio supports teaching and learning by providing a wide range of state-of-the-art multimedia presentation technologies in a unique, one-of-a-kind professional "studio" environment. Students can work individually or in teams in private Digital Video Editing rooms or at the "quad" workstations. More importantly, the SMS staff also provides individualized, group and web-based instructional tutorials to assist students in the creation of multimedia, graphics, digital audio/video and web-based presentations. WHO'S USING THE SMS?
Every year more than 8000 students sign-in at the SMS. Faculty teaching more than 300 different course sections representing more than 50 academic departments refer their students directly to the SMS and its instructional resources for support, request the creation of dozens of print and on-line multimedia project tutorials (many of which are available on this website) and request approximately 90 "in-class" workshops specifically geared to their course's multi-modal project assignments.
AT THE SMS STUDENTS CAN...
- Create PowerPoint Presentations, from traditional slides with images to "multimedia enhanced" presentations with animated effects, music, narration and video. Then, burn the presentation to a CD-R, record it onto videotape or upload it to the web.
- Create a Website using MS Word, Powerpoint, Publisher, Frontpage, Dreamweaver or i-Web then publish it to their own web space on the Kent Personal Server.
- Capture and edit Video for use in Powerpoint presentations, to play on the web, or to burn to a CD-R or DVD.
- Record their Voice or create Music to add to a video, Powerpoint or web-based presentation.
- Scan and edit documents, photographs, slides or film.
- Create PDF documents from scanned documents or from files.
- Create Graphics or Animations using Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, or 3DS Max.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, STUDENTS CAN GET HELP AT THE SMS....
- "Basic Help" is available on a 1st come - 1st serve basis from one of our Multimedia Consultants. Consultants can provide students with printed tutorials to help guide them through just about any multimedia, web or video project. They can also demonstrate the proper use of SMS equipment, show them how to use software or help solve almost any problem they might be having.
- "Advanced Help" is also available by making an appointment with the manager or assistant manager. For more information visit the Student Support page.
- Step-by-Step Print and Video Tutorials are also available On-line. We highly recommend that students (and faculty) check out the Tutorials on this website. They may save students a trip to the SMS and save faculty a lot of technology related headaches.
