Shelving - Student Employment Positions

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Learn and become proficient in the Library of Congress classification system in order to shelve and retrieve library materials on floors 3 through 9 and lst floor
  • Recognize differences of spine labels and locations for various collections on all floors
  • Shelf read classification numbers on the spines of library materials after they have been shelved to make sure materials are correctly placed
  • Clears unchecked materials from study carrels, library tables and marked yellow shelves
  • Places returned books on appropriate sorting shelf
  • Places books on cart in call number order
  • Assist in special projects which may include shifting materials, building or disassembling metal shelving units, moving furniture and various other library tasks.

Qualifications and Special Skills

  • Attentive to the precise detail of call numbers
  • Watchful for misplaced materials
  • Alert to the need for order within a library
  • Ability to work with and cooperate with others
  • Conscientious about completing independent tasks
  • Able to work under the supervision of one or two people who usually work along with assistants
  • Aware of library study atmosphere.
