Shelving - Student Employment Positions
Duties and Responsibilities
-
Learn and become proficient in the Library of Congress classification system in order to shelve and retrieve library materials on floors 3 through 9 and lst floor
-
Recognize differences of spine labels and locations for various collections on all floors
-
Shelf read classification numbers on the spines of library materials after they have been shelved to make sure materials are correctly placed
-
Clears unchecked materials from study carrels, library tables and marked yellow shelves
-
Places returned books on appropriate sorting shelf
-
Places books on cart in call number order
-
Assist in special projects which may include shifting materials, building or disassembling metal shelving units, moving furniture and various other library tasks.
Qualifications and Special Skills

Attentive to the precise detail of call numbers

Watchful for misplaced materials

Alert to the need for order within a library
-
Ability to work with and cooperate with others
-
Conscientious about completing independent tasks
-
Able to work under the supervision of one or two people who usually work along with assistants
-
Aware of library study atmosphere.
