Shelving - Student Employment Positions
Duties and Responsibilities
- Learn and become proficient in the Library of Congress classification system in order to shelve and retrieve library materials on floors 3 through 9 and lst floor
- Recognize differences of spine labels and locations for various collections on all floors
- Shelf read classification numbers on the spines of library materials after they have been shelved to make sure materials are correctly placed
- Clears unchecked materials from study carrels, library tables and marked yellow shelves
- Places returned books on appropriate sorting shelf
- Places books on cart in call number order
- Assist in special projects which may include shifting materials, building or disassembling metal shelving units, moving furniture and various other library tasks.
Qualifications and Special Skills
- Attentive to the precise detail of call numbers
- Watchful for misplaced materials
- Alert to the need for order within a library
- Ability to work with and cooperate with others
- Conscientious about completing independent tasks
- Able to work under the supervision of one or two people who usually work along with assistants
- Aware of library study atmosphere.
