History of the Department of Africana Studies

The Department of Africana Studies was created in response to protests and demonstrations by Kent State students, led largely by the student group Black United Students (BUS) in the 1960s. According to an informational brochure from 1983, which can be found in Box 1 of this collection, "In the late 1960's, Black students demanded that the University curriculum significantly reflect their historical and contemporary experiences. For too long the contribution of Africans and people of African descent living throughout the world had been essentially ignored or inaccurately treated. The development of the Institute for African American Affairs (IAAA) and subsequently the Department of Pan-African Studies (DPAS) was the University's affirmative response to the demands of those Black students." From this description you will also note the various names associated with the department and so in this collection the department is referred to as the Institute for African American Affairs (IAAA), the Department of Pan-African Studies (DPAS), and the Department of Africana Studies, depending on the time period. There are also many materials related to the Center of Pan-African Culture which is the programming unit for the department. In the 1980s, the department also became home to the African Community Theatre (ACT). The department has been located in a few different buildings on campus including the Ward House, Rockwell Hall, and Oscar Ritchie Hall (old student union).

For more detailed information about the history of this program we recommend reviewing the publication Involvement/2 years later : a report on programming in the area of black student concerns at Kent State University, 1968-1970 by Milton E. Wilson. You may also want to view The First Fifteen Years: Black Educational Programming at KSU from 1969-1983 (Box 1) and The Meaning, History, and Educational Mission of the Department of Pan-African Studies (Box 4).
