Historical Note

Through the efforts of Patricia Burnett, Ohio Labor History Project, and Henry Mattern, Secretary-Treasurer of the Youngstown Allied Printing Trades Council, these records arrived on February 15, 1980, at the Special Collections and Archives, Kent State University.

The Youngstown Allied Printing Trades Council (YAPTC) is an organization which represents various craft unions connected with the printing trades in the Youngstown area. Each craft is organized into a separate union and each sends delegates to the Allied Printing Trades Council. The unions represented by the Council in these records are the bookbinders, the typographical union, the pressmen, the photoengravers, the mailers, and the stereotypers' union.

Scope and Content

Although the first dated minutes are for 1912, there is mention of earlier meetings of the Council held in 1909 and 1910. Traditionally, it has listened to complaints concerning the conditions of various companies in the area, established and enforced trade rules, and designated, through the use of an Allied Printing Trades Council label, various companies as approved places to patronize. This collection consists of bound records, mainly minute books, covering the period 1912 through 1969. The minutes from 1927 through 1938 are missing. This collection and other labor history collections already in Special Collections and Archives at Kent State can be used to trace the development of labor organizations in the eastern Ohio area.

The Youngstown Allied Printing Trades Council has donated literary and property rights to Special Collections and Archives.
