Biographical Note: William C. Barrett was born on October 2, 1930. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Kent State University in 1954. In 1967, he was hired as the Editor of Alumni Publications. At the time of his retirement in 1997, Barrett was the Senior Alumni Associate in the Office of Alumni Relations.
Scope and Content: William C. Barrett was editor of the alumni magazine, KENT, at the time of the Kent State shootings, on May 4, 1970. As editor, he and Donald Shook, Director of Alumni Relations, were the recipients of many letters from alumni in response to the shootings. The Office of the President also forwarded letters sent by alumni to the Office of Alumni Relations. These letters comprise the largest portion of the collection, and provide insight into the reactions of alumni from across the country. The collection also includes publications, reports, transcripts of speeches, statements, and materials used in the publication KENT.
Acquisitions Information: William Barrett donated his papers to the Kent State University Archives in two installments: September 25, 1975 and March 30, 1979.
