Scope and Content

This collection consists of photographs and contact sheets produced primarily by University News Service before, during, and after the May 4, 1970 shootings at Kent State University. The first photographs were taken on May 1-3, 1970. This group consists of a small number of photos. The bulk of the photographs were taken on May 4, 1970. A small portion of the collection consists of photographs taken by agencies other than University News Services. Also present are a number of unidentified photographs that were taken during the same time period (May 1-4, 1970).

Please refer to the accompanying binder as a "key" to the images in this collection. Each photograph has been photocopied. Each photocopy is labeled with the box and folder number in which the actual photograph is located.

May 4 Collection -- Box 28

Box 28 contains identified photographs arranged in numerical order by News Service Photography Department numbers. The first part of the number (for example, 705/4) identifies the date on which the photo was taken, starting with the year, then the month, then the day. Thus, 705/4 indicates that the photo was taken in 1970 on May 4. The remainder of the News Service number refers to the file and frame numbers assigned to the negatives (for example, 1-15A refers to file 1, frame 15A).

May 4 Collection -- Box 28A

Box 28A contains a small group of photographs taken by agencies or persons other than University News Services, such as the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Although this group of photos did not originate with University News Services, they were part of the collection of photographs held by that office before they were transferred to the University Archives. Box 28A also contains 71 unidentified photographs, some of which probably were taken by University News Services and others of which were taken by unidentified sources.
