Finding Aid

Prepared by William R. Doezema, December 11, 1975; Prepared for the Web by Shauntya Jones, June 21, 1999; Last updated: April 2021

Inclusive Dates: 1932-1969
Extent: 8.50 cubic feet (8 record storage boxes + flat oversized box)
Physical Location: Storage

Storage Note: This collection is housed in a climate-controlled environment off site and requires at least up to three weeks for retrieval. Please call or email the department with requests for this material prior to planning your visit. Oversized items remain on-site in Special Collections and Archives.

Historical Note: The United Way of Ashtabula County can trace its origins back at least as far as 1920, when the Ashtabula County Community Fund was created. Since that time, the Community Fund has gone through various name and organizational changes, but by and large its original purpose has remained the same: to operate as a centralized agency for raising funds and for providing budgetary and planning services for various social services organizations. In 1938, the Community Fund was converted into the Ashtabula Community Chest, Inc., but in 1952 the agency became known as the United Fund of Ashtabula County, Inc. United Appeal, Inc. of Ashtabula County was adopted as the new agency title in 1959. In 1966, the Ashtabula County Welfare Federation, a somewhat similar but separate organization founded in 1948, merged with the United Appeal to form United Community Services of Ashtabula County, which in turn became The United Way of Ashtabula County in 1974.

Scope and Content: In this collection, which includes materials dating back from 1932-69, researchers will find an abundance of records--minutes, correspondence, campaign literature, newspaper clippings, reports, financial information, and related materials--with which to document the history, internal dynamics, accomplishments, and contributions of the organization.

Acquisition Information: On September 16, 1975, Betty Bell, Executive Director of The United Way of Ashtabula County, secured approval from the Board of Directors for transfer of their non-current records to the American History Research Center, which is a statewide program of which Kent State Special Collections and Archives was a member at the time of this transfer.

Processing Note: Old Archives Number: B.1.4.1.

Arrangement: Materials have been arranged first topically and then chronologically, where such an order is feasible, within each of the subject areas. Since the Ashtabula County Welfare Federation was a separate agency until 1966, most of its records have been placed together. Some of the Federation's records, however, are with those of the United Appeal. These combined records are found in several folders labeled "Development of United Community Services," which document the three-year process (1964-66) by which the Federation and United Appeal, through collaboration, were converted into one organization. All newspaper clippings, except those found in the scrapbooks, were photocopied and returned to the United Way of Ashtabula County. The copies are located in appropriate places within the collection. Oversized items are located in a separate flat oversized box.
