Biography of Norman V. Duffy Jr.: Dr. Norman V. Duffy Jr. was a chemist and longtime faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at Kent State University. He joined the university in 1966 after earning his Ph.D. in chemistry from Georgetown University. Duffy was present on campus during the Kent State shootings and served as a faculty marshal on May 4, 1970. As a faculty marshal, he served as a liaison between administration and students during university-wide gatherings and campus unrest, to assist in maintaining order and resolution. For thirty years, Duffy served as professor and department chair until his retirement from Kent State University in 1996.
Norman V. Duffy Jr. passed away on October 3, 2025.
Scope and Content: The Norman V. Duffy Jr. papers contain correspondence between Duffy and his chemistry students in response to completing their coursework and the events surrounding May 4, 1970 and their aftermath. The collection also includes speaking engagements related to the Kent State shootings.
