History of League of Women Voters of Kent
The League of Women Voters of Kent (LWVK), Ohio was formed in March 1953, with formal recognition being given in 1954. The national League of Women Voters, of which the LWVK is a chapter, was formed in 1920, and serves as "a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government." The League is a 501(c)(4) corporation. The LWVK has an organizational structure consisting of a member-board, including officers and directors. The LWVK also maintains a number of topical committees which study specific areas of public interest and create position statements and produce reports, voter guides, newsletters and directories.
Scope and Content
This collection, dating from 1940s-2008, contains the records of the League of Women Voters of Kent (LWVK), Ohio. These records include LWVK working files such as board minutes, treasurers' reports, correspondence and fund drive files. The collection also contains subject and committee files on topics of LWVK study and work, including the City of Kent, Know Your Schools, Environmental Issues and Voter Services. It contains LWVK publications such as newsletters, member handbooks and directories of public officials in Kent and Portage County. Newspaper clippings and scrapbooks contained in this collection document LWVK history.

Acquisition Information
In 1984 Jane Preston, then chapter president, donated the League of Women Voters of Kent records to Kent State University Libraries. Additional material was donated in 1985, 1996, 2000, 2003 and 2012.
