History of Tanzania Teacher Training Project

In 1961, Kent State University College of Education entered into a contract with the United States International Cooperation Administration (ICA) to conduct a survey of the teacher-education training facilities and resources in the newly independent nation of Tanganyika (later Tanzania). Faculty from Kent completed the survey in November 1961. Following the survey, Kent State University agreed to carry out additional work on behalf of the newly organized U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Two consecutive teams of Kent State University College of Education faculty were stationed in Tanzania between 1962 and 1966. The teams helped to plan and equip the new Dar es Salaam Teachers' College with health education, library education, and audio-visual education programs and equipment. Team members reviewed and provided additional training and resources to other teaching colleges in Tanzania as well. As part of the project, a number of individual 'participant educators' from Tanzania were recruited for coursework or graduate degrees in the United States. Participant educators studied at Kent State University and elsewhere. Following their return to Tanzania, these participant educators were to teach at the Dar es Salaam Teacher College. The project was called by several names over time including the College of Education Tanganyika Project, the Kent State University USAID to Tanganyika (KSUSAIDAR) Project, and the Teacher Training Project. The contract ended in 1966 and team members returned to Kent State University.
