History of the Kent State University College of Architecture and Environmental Design
In 1947, Architectural draftsmanship began as a two-year program at Kent State University offered by the Department of Industrial Arts. In 1950 a four-year Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Architecture was introduced, and in 1956 an official Department of Architecture was established, headed by Professor Joseph F. Morbito. The program continued to grow and in 1968 a Masters program was added. The program became part of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), and in 1962 was accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). It became the School of Architecture (1970), the School of Architecture and Environmental Design (1972) and eventually the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED). Taylor Hall was completed in 1967 to house the Architecture and Journalism programs. A new building designed to house the CAED program was completed in 2016.
