History of the Center for Urban Regionalism

The Center for Urban Regionalism (CUR) was a multidisciplinary research center at Kent State University. It specialized in urban public service, regional affairs, economic growth in metropolitan communities, transportation management, and public planning primarily in Northeastern Ohio. The Center's research concentrated on three areas: fiscal growth in urban areas, public resources, and transportation training. James G. Coke was the first director of the Center for Urban Regionalism in 1965, succeeded by Eugene P. Wenninger in 1970. The Center later broadened efforts to include environmental studies and related communication and information projects, consequently renaming circa 1973 to the Center for Urban Regionalism and Environmental Systems (CUR/ES). In 1977, the Center merged with the University Research Center.
