Abstract: The collection contains the official records and publications of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES), an organization founded in 1956 as the Comparative Education Society. The Society promotes the study and teaching of comparative education and international studies in education.

History of the Comparative and International Education Society: The Comparative Education Society (CIES) was established on April 27, 1956, following the Third Annual Meeting at New York University of American educators interested in comparative education. William W. Brickman, Convener of the Annual Meetings at New York University, was elected the first President of the Society; Robert B. Sutton (Ohio State University) was elected the first Vice President; Gerald H. Read (Kent State University) was elected the first Secretary-Treasurer. "International" became part of the Society's name in September 1969, to reflect the broadened scope of interest held by its expanding membership. The Society's business office was located at Kent State University until 1973. Today, the Society's has grown to over 2,100 members. It publishes a newsletter and a journal (Comparative Education Review), holds an annual conference, and organizes standing and ad hoc committees to address specific objectives and professional interests.

Scope and Content: The CIES records are comprised of documents and audio-visual materials representing the history, activities, and interests of CIES since its creation in 1956. These files include materials from the CIES Secretariat, volumes of Comparative Education Review and associated records, files of the various presidents of CIES, records of the CIES annual conference, and CIES study tours undertaken during the organization's earlier years.

Statement of Arrangement: The collection is currently organized into six series.

Separated Material: The Comparative Education Review is cataloged separately in KentLINK and shelved on the 10th floor.

Restrictions on Access: Unpublished manuscripts in the CER records series are restricted for ten years after the date on which they were created.

Restrictions on Use: Kent State University does not own the copyright to materials in this collection. Copyright resides with CIES or individual authors of manuscripts, when applicable.

Acquisition Information: The Kent State University Archives became of the official depository of the records of the Comparative and International Education Society by action of the Society's Board of Directors in October, 1980. Professor George Z. F. Bereday, Editor of the Comparative Education Review (1957-1966), made the first donation to the collection in January, 1981. Since then, records from the Secretariat, various Presidents of the Society, and the Review have been placed in the collection.

Accruals: Materials are added to the collection on a regular basis.

Processing Information: The CIES records at Kent State University are currently undergoing extensive revision and further processing, and thus the organization of the collection and structure and content of this finding aid will change throughout the year. As of January 2015, the Secretariat series and Presidential files have been extensively revised and updated, and the Founding Members series including the papers of William Brickman and Gerald Read as well as a Subject Files series have been added to the collection. Processing work on the CER records is continuing at this time.

Series 1: Comparative Education Review, Editors' Files

Scope and Content: This very large series of the CIES records includes the editors' files from the Comparative Education Review, including correspondence and files on both accepted (published) and rejected manuscripts.

Processing Information: Special Collections and Archives is re-processing this entire series. The files are accessible at this time, but we recommend that you contact us in advance with requests, so we can best serve your research needs.

Series 2: Secretariat Records

Scope and Content: Since the Comparative and International Education Society was founded in 1956, (originally as the Comparative Education Society) its Secretariat has been responsible for carrying out the general operation of the organization as prescribed by the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. These duties include but are not limited to the collection and approval of meeting minutes from conventions of various CIES committees, the publishing of a CIES newsletter, serve as a permanent repository for CIES records not otherwise entrusted to the Treasurer or Archive, and the publication of a CIES membership directory. Throughout the subseries below documents and materials relating to all of these activities are represented, and these holdings will continue to grow as accessions continue to come in and CIES updates its archival collection.

Subseries 2: CES and CIES Newsletters

Scope and Content: Although this organization began as the Comparative Education Society, through a vote of the membership the name was changed to Comparative and International Education Society in December, 1968. You will notice that the title of their newsletter reflects this change. Also, beginning in June 1967 and published periodically throughout the newsletters run, a membership directory was included with the newsletter. In 1989 this grew into its own publication with the appearance of the 1989 - 1990 CIES Membership Directory. These individual membership directories are listed as a separate subseries below.

Subseries 6: CIES Secretariat Correspondence

Scope and Content: The CIES Secretariat has been responsible for a surprisingly large range of duties since the establishing of the organization in 1956. According to the CIES Constitution and Bylaws, the Secretary shall: "See that minutes of the Society’s meetings and of its Board of Directors and Executive Committee are kept and, when approved, made a part of its permanent records; Coordinate information on regional meetings authorized to be held under Society auspices; Compile, edit, and publish a newsletter and issue it to the members; Be responsible for the Society Web Site and other electronic communication forums; Prepare and disseminate the biennial membership directory; Serve as Society liaison in connection with information dissemination networks; Prepare the call to the Annual Meeting; Receive sealed ballots by the date specified on the ballot, and present them to the tellers for tally during the Annual Meeting; Receive and tabulate returns on any special poll authorized by the Board of Directors, or the Executive Committee, and share the results of the survey with the Board; Serve as custodian of records of the Society at the Secretariat other than those entrusted to the Treasurer and to the Archive under the supervision of the Historian; and Perform other duties consistent with the office." This subseries is composed of correspondence to and from the Secretariat relating to the duties outlined above.

Series 4: Founding Members: William W. Brickman papers

Biographical Note: William W. Brickman (1913-1986) was an influential proponent of the need for comparative education and was one of the founding members of the Comparative Education Society in 1956. He was a faculty member at New York University and the University of Pennsylvania, was a prolific scholar, and led several comparative education study tours during his long and distinguished career.

Scope and Content: The William W. Brickman papers document small portions of Brickman's career through clippings, lecture notes, reading lists, research projects, reports, and photographs. The photographs also cover Brickman's military career during World War II and then his transition back to academic life, while numerous course outlines, papers, and research materials clearly outline Brickman's career and focus in comparative education.

Series 4: Founding Members: Gerald H. Read papers

Biographical Note: Gerald H. Read (1913-2005) was a central character in the early years of the Comparative and International Education Society, and was instrumental in developing CIES into the organization we know today. However, he held a special interest the educational systems of other countries and was the first to organize study tours abroad, including the first tours to Communist nations during the 1950s and 1960s, to investigate this wide variety of educational operations. Thousands of educators attended study tours organized by Read. He was a faculty member in the Kent State University College of Education from 1948 until his retirement in 1976. The College is also the home of the Gerald H. Read Center for International and Intercultural Education established by the Read family in 1987.

Scope and Content: This series not only holds the reports, often handwritten notes of Dr. Read, schedules, and other items related to the study tours, but also includes the background research compiled in preparation for each visit and subject files of specific topics Dr. Read considered important to investigate. This series also include Read's correspondence with Russian scholar Dr. Zoya Malkova
