History of Kent State University Alumni publications:

Kent State University Alumni Association publications have been a staple throughout much of the university's history, despite many name and format changes over the years. Kent State Alumnus, issued from 1933 to 1937, was the first alumni publication, issued at President Engleman's request as a means to keep graduates connected. These early editions often featured news of campus events, athletic updates, and alumni announcements. Kent State Alumnus changed to Kent Alumnus in 1941 and continued through 1968. These early issues typically produced four part volumes per year.

In 1969, the brand new Kent replaced the Kent Alumnus. Kent took on a larger format and came to resemble a magazine. Emphasis began to be placed on layout, photography, and feature stories as opposed to announcements and news. The format changed to tabloid size until the 1990s when the name changed again to Kent Alumni. At this point, the alumni publication strongly resembled a magazine in look and content, continuing up to the current volume now called Kent State Magazine. In the early 2000s Kent State Magazine became a university magazine published by University Communications and Marketing. In Fall 2023, the magazine stopped being printed and mailed. Issues since 2023 were only published as digital editions. 

Scope and Content: This collection contains the publications for alumni produced by the Alumni Association since 1933, including Kent State Alumnus, Kent Alumnus, Kent, Kent Alumni, and Kent State Magazine. It also includes Kent State Magazine as published by University Communications and Marketing since 2001. Digital versions of most Kent State Magazine from 2005-2023 are also available in this collection.
