Biography of Raymond E. Manchester
Raymond Earl Manchester (1884-1974) was a teacher and administrator at Kent State University, a writer of essays and poetry, and a prominent member of the civic and political community in Kent, Ohio. Following a career as the Dean of Men at Kent State University, he twice served as the Mayor of the City of Kent and once as Portage County State Representative.
Born in Battle Creek, Michigan on March 6, 1884, Manchester attended the University of Michigan for both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. He taught Mathematics in Michigan, Wisconsin and New York before coming to Kent State College in 1920. Manchester served as the Head of the Mathematics Department, and Advisor to Men, and in 1925 he was appointed Dean of Men, a position he held for almost 30 years.
Manchester authored several books on mathematics, and his poetry and fiction were published in a number of magazines and booklets. However, Manchester is most noted for his series, The Saturday Letter, a short weekly essay in letter form, written to dispense humor and advice to Kent State University's male student population. The Saturday Letter was popular and copies were sent to alumni, fellow deans, friends, and associates world-wide. Manchester began The Saturday Letter in 1934, and continued writing it following his retirement from the University. During World War II and the Korean War, Manchester worked to have these letters and other University publications sent to members of the Kent State community in service.
Raymond Manchester married Mary Josephine Kennedy in 1909 and they had two daughters, Mary Jane (Manchester) Lagler and Elizabeth Ellen 'Betty' (Manchester) Weir. Manchester's daughters both attended Kent's University School (for primary school and high school) and Kent State University (for undergraduate degrees). Mary Jane received an MA and PhD from the University of Michigan and Betty received an MA from Wellesley.
Manchester was an active Democrat, and following his retirement from the University in 1954, he successfully ran for mayor of the City of Kent in 1955 and 1957, and as state representative for Portage County in 1958. Manchester died in April of 1974.
