Biography of John A. Begala
John Begala was born to Harriet and Joseph Begala on November 29, 1950. His father was a noted athlete and wrestling coach at Kent State University. Begala attended the Kent State University Laboratory School and then Kent State University. He received an undergraduate degree in political science in 1972 and went on to receive a Masters in history with a minor in political science in 1975. While in graduate school, Begala was elected as a Councilman-at-Large to the Kent City Council and served from 1974 to 1976. Begala represented Ohio's 62nd district in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1977 to 1982. Begala is very involved with issues of health and human services and has served as the Deputy Director and Chief of Staff for the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (1983-1985), Vice President of the Greater Cincinnati Hospital Council (1986-1990), in several positions at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (1991-1994), and as the Senior Vice President for Planning and Community Affairs with the MetroHealth System in Cleveland, Ohio (1994-1998). Begala served as the Executive Director for the Center for Community Solutions (formerly the Federation for Community Planning) from 1998 to 2005, and from 2008 to 2014. Begala has also taught in the fields of history, government and business administration at the University of Cincinnati and Baldwin Wallace College. Begala is married to Carole Begala and they have a son, Stephen.
Scope and Content
The John A. Begala papers document Begala's career in Ohio politics and public service from the mid-1970s through 2014. The collection includes files which document legislation Begala worked on while serving as an Ohio State Representative (1977-1982) as well as general subjects and organizational files. These papers also include both files and publications documenting Begala's work at the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and the Center for Community Solutions (formerly the Federation for Community Planning).
Statement of Arrangement
The John A. Begala papers have come to the Kent State University Special Collections and Archives in several large donations including two donations in 1980, a donation in 1982 and other significant donations in 1986 and 2014. Paper-based finding aids were created for the 1980 and 1982 donations, which is reflected in the collection's arrangement into three separate segments, based on when material was accessioned.

Acquisition Information
John A. Begala donated his papers to the American History Research Center at Kent State University on July 31, 1980, with additional materials donated on September 5, 1980. A paper-based finding aid was created for the 1980 donations which now forms Series 1 of the John A. Begala papers. On May 17, 1982 Begala donated addition material which was also processed as a separate finding aid and forms Series 2. Begala donated additional material on January 29th, 1986 and December 19, 2014 which now forms Series 3 of the John A. Begala papers.
