Biography of Stanley Garfinkel
Stanley Garfinkel (1930-1997) was a native of Cleveland. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College in 1952 and a master's from Princeton University in 1956. He began teaching history at Kent State University's Geauga Campus in 1963 and he continued to teach at the University for over 30 years, retiring in 1996. Garfinkel's professional interests included the Holocaust, and the American and French fashion industries. Garfinkel employed both oral history and documentary film-making in much of his work. Garfinkel's documentary film projects included From Dust & Ashes, Completely Dior,Roger Vivier: Shoe Magician, Le Theatre de la Mode (for which he won an Emmy), Steven Stipleman: Fashion Illustrator, Playtimes Past, Kleibacker Talks About Couture, The Power of Dance, Embroidery: The Legacy of Needlearts and Shannon Rodgers for Jerry Silverman: Style & Quality on 7th Avenue. Garfinkel died in 1997.
Scope and Content
The Stanley Garfinkel papers span the years 1940 to 1997. They include documentation of Garfinkel's teaching and professional career at Kent State University (1963-1996) and his many oral history and documentary film projects. This material includes correspondence, grant applications, background research and interview cassette tapes and transcripts.

Acquisition Information
In 1985 Garfinkel donated his oral history research on the Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects to the Kent State Special Collections and Archives. In the 1990s, Garfinkel gave his professional papers to Dr. Elizabeth Rhodes as director of Kent State University's Fashion School and the collection was housed in the Fashion Library. The collection was transferred to Special Collections and Archives in July 2014.
