Copyright for Student Authors

The rights and responsibilities of copyright apply to students and their original work, just as they do for faculty.  Students' original work can include (but is not limited to) a term paper, website, or musical composition.  A faculty member wishing to use a student work in a class, on course reserve, or in a course pack, may do so the first semester under the "Fair Use" provision of copyright.  Subsequent use requires written permission from the student author.  A faculty member wishing to use a significant portion (beyond "Fair Use") of a student work in a publication or as part of another scholarly endeavor is also advised to obtain written permission from the student author.
