Closing the Library Policy

It is the policy of University Libraries to give patrons adequate advanced notification when the building will close and services be curtailed.  This provides patrons time to conclude their activities, collect personal possessions, check out materials as necessary and leave the premises in a timely manner.

30 minutes before the library closes, a public announcement is made to inform patrons that the library is closing and that anyone not authorized to be in the building must leave at that time.  The announcement also instructs patrons who have questions or materials to be checked in or out to come to the Circulation Desk, as all service points close in 15 minutes.

15 minutes before the library closes a second public announcement is made to inform patrons that the library is closing, that all service points are now closed and that anyone not authorized to be in the building must prepare to leave the building.  The announcement also lets patrons know that lights will begin being turned off at this time.

A final public announcement is made when the library is closed.  The announcement informs the patron that the library is now closed and anyone not authorized to be in the building at this time is considered to be trespassing and will be asked to leave the building immediately.  If the patron refuses to leave, the University Library Security or Circulation Service staff member will contact Kent State University Police for assistance.
