University Archivist

The Kent State University Libraries invite applicants for the position of University Archivist. We are looking for a dynamic, committed librarian/archivist to manage university history collections administered by Special Collections & Archives. This full-time, non-tenure track faculty librarian will fulfill operational, instruction, collection development, and outreach responsibilities related to historical university archives and records.

Minimum salary: $55,000

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MLS, MLIS, or MS from an ALA-accredited program of library and/or information science.
  • Two years of prior professional work experience in special collections/archives in an academic library or similar setting.
  • Familiarity with archival theory, practice, and standards.
  • Experience providing reference services in a special collections/archives setting.
  • Experience with processing archival collections and creating finding aids. 
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to completion of detailed operational responsibilities on a daily basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Formal training in archives and special collections librarianship, academic librarianship, and/or digital archives.
  • Experience in collection appraisal and management functions.
  • Experience in digitization of archival materials.
  • Supervisory experience. 
  • Experience in goal setting, development, and execution of projects.
  • Familiarity with legal aspects of archival administration.

Examples of Duties:

  • In coordination with the Head of Special Collections and Archives, acquires, appraises, and accessions University records, papers, and other materials in all formats and from all sources (both affiliated and non-affiliated).
  • Processes and preserves historical University materials in all formats and supervises this work by others in the unit, such as student employees.
  • Co-administers, with University General Counsel, the records retention program of Kent State University including programs targeted on electronic records management and retention.
  • Works cooperatively with the May 4 Archivist on acquisition, appraisal, and accessioning of materials that are related to May 4, but are also University historical records (i.e., those created and collected by university staff, offices, and organizations).
  • Provides selected class sessions, tours, and other instructional programs related to university history collections.
  • Provides reference and research assistance related to university history collections and participates in reference services on the public service desk on a regular basis.
  • Actively participates in digitization projects, social media, and other outreach programs related to university history collections.
