The Main Library Circulation desk now has Chromebook laptops for checkout to all Kent State students, faculty, or staff.

An Introduction to Chromebooks

A Chromebook is not the same as a Windows or Mac laptop: Chromebooks use a different operating system called Chrome OS, which means the programs you can normally install on Windows or Mac operating systems cannot be installed on a Chromebook. Because Kent State uses Google Apps for Education, Chromebooks will allow for immediate access to your student email, Google Drive (including Docs, Sheets, and Slides), and any Chrome apps or extensions you already have. You can only install Chrome apps or extensions from the Chrome Web Store; however, you only have to install an app one time. Once an app is associated with your account, it will show up on any Chromebook you log in to. Additionally, any app you install will not show up for anyone else who logs in to that Chromebook — which means you can add any apps you want while using this computer!

Security

The Main Library Chromebooks are specifically set up to only allow the use of a Kent State University login. To use it, you must log in with the same username and password as you would for your Kent State email or Flashline accounts. Upon logging in, Chromebooks will automatically sign you in and sync certain programs like your Kent State email, Google Drive, and any bookmarks or apps you have saved for that account. You can add any apps you want to your account while using this laptop —  simply logging off or shutting down the computer will erase all of this information. However, you should still save all documents to your Kent State Google account.

*No one will ever be able to see what logins have been used on a particular Chromebook.

Included Items

Chromebooks circulate as a bundle of the following items:

One (1) Chromebook laptop
One (1) charging cable
One (1) laptop bag

All items (laptop, charging cable, and bag) must be returned together. Overdue fines will be assessed if any item is missing upon return, until the missing item is also returned. See "Fines" below.

Library guests may also check out additional items such as mice or display cables. These items circulate separately and are not included in the Chromebook bundle. (Return to the Equipment page for more information.)

Loan Period

Two (2) day loans, due on the due date by 11:59 pm or closing time (when the library is not open 24/5 – 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, Sunday through Thursday.) Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays are not counted in the two-day loan period.

**Due to high demand, when they are returned, Chromebooks may not be checked out again by the same guest until the next business day.
