Historical Note

The records of the T. G. Parsons Lumber Company and property rights to them were transferred to the American History Research Center on February 3, 1978, by the Kent Historical Society. As noted in the inventory, a few items were also donated on January 8, 1979, by Miss Dorothy Parsons of Sebring, Ohio, grand-daughter of Timothy Graves (T. G.) Parsons and daughter of Edward Sawyer (E. S.) Parsons.

When the Parsons Lumber Company closed its doors in 1970 it had been under continuous family operation for over a century. It was on September 25, 1865, that T. G. Parsons and his brother E. A. Parsons formed a partnership to "carry on the Business of Dealing in Lumber, Shingle, and Lath and Running the Planning Mill," that business to be known as "E. A. Parsons and Bro." (see box 10, folder five). At some later time, E. A. Parsons appears to have left the business to become treasurer of the Railway Speed Recorder Company in Kent. The firm then became known as the T.G. Parsons Lumber Company, run by T. G. Parsons with the assistance of his sons. The sons, E. S., and Dwight, took over the management of the business after their father's death in 1923. It is the company as these three men knew it, from 1892 through the 1920s, which is reflected in the bulk of the collection.

Some biographical information about the Kent members of the Parsons family can be found in PORTAGE HERITAGE (1957), pages 638-641, including a biographical sketch of Dwight's son, Charles, the last Parsons to manage the company. Not included is a third son of T. G. Parsons, John T. Parsons. John was also involved in the lumber business, working for a time for the Nicola, Stone Lumber Company in Cleveland and, after 1910, as a partner in the Myers-Parsons Lumber Company of Pittsburgh. His letters to the family in Kent are generally filed with the correspondence of his firm in this collection.

Scope and Content

The collection is divided by type of material into two main sections: papers and bound volumes. The papers, or financial records, were originally stored in cardboard filing cases. The list of possible contents suggested by the filing case manufacturer provides, in fact, a very accurate description of the contents of the Parsons' files: "invoices, orders, bills, receipts, special agents, city bills, personal, lading, quotations, statements, reports." All of these varied items were filed alphabetically by year usually with the records of the first half of the year in one case and those of the second half in another.

For the most part the original arrangement has been preserved, although the contents of both boxes for a single year have been interfiled and the items placed in strict rather than random alphabetical and chronological order. Only when an item seemed obviously misfiled, or various like items were filed inconsistently; or, in a few instances, when related items were widely dispersed by the Parsons' filing system, has the processor refiled materials. In all instances of refiling, however, the original location has been pencilled in brackets on the item. In some cases cross-references have been made to assist the researcher in locating interrelated materials. A few items with no apparent alphabetical location have been filed under "miscellaneous items" at the end of each year. These include automobile certificates, and all tax material which were originally filed variously under state or county or merely under "I" for "income tax." Post cards have been filed ahead of other materials from the same source in order to prevent misplacement of these smaller items. One oversized item, marked (hf) in the inventory, has been placed in the horizontal file.

By and large, then, the Parsons' filing system has been retained along with a certain amount of original coal dust which filtered into the file boxes over the years. If this original system occasionally seems unique, the researcher is encouraged to seek the reason. A correspondent may sometimes have written in an official capacity, and at others, on the same letterhead, as a friend or as a customer. A lumber agent may have represented a particular company on some occasions and on others have written to Parsons on his own. Personal family bills and receipts for loads of hay may have been filed among business papers because they were being applied for credit.

The number of personal items included among the financial records increases the value of the first eight boxes as a source of historical detail concerning the town and the times.

Box nine contains financial papers but these are all of one kind, being Parsons Lumber Company charge slips for the year 1934. Some of the slips so filed are dated 1935, and the researcher is advised that in regard to all of the financial records of the collection, materials filed under a given year may also include some items from previous and later years. Frequently the reason is apparent as when bills have been filed under the date paid. But apparent or not, rather than disturb the evidence of the historical record, all such items have been left where found. The additional years, however, are not indicated in the inventory listings.

Boxes, ten, eleven and twelve and folder thirteen of box nine contain bound volumes. These are mainly cahsbooks, day books, annual financial statement and inventory books, ledger and ledger indexes. When these volumes are oversized they are marked (shelf) in the inventory and will be found on the shelf at the end of the collection. Here especially, the student of business history can see methods of bookkeeping employed at the end of the nineteenth century and during the first quarter of the twentieth. In the earlier boxes he can study the general conduct of business in that more leisurely and gracious time, and also witness signs of change, observe effects of legislation and government regulation such as the beginnings of corporation income tax and the institution of the Industrial Commission. In such an investigation the Parsons Lumber Company can be taken as an example of business practices of the time, or it can be studied for its own unique and individual history.

The collection is also, obviously, an important source for an historian of the lumber industry. In the many bills and invoices, day books, and ledgers one can learn what kinds of lumber were used, their cost, and quality, where and how they were purchased and how transported, from the 1890’s, the end of the big lumber boom, through the 1920’s. Some construction materials can be seen to change during this time. Beaverboard is introduced, for example, along with composition, insurance companies and publications, is also documented by lading included among the financial records and occasional correspondence with the railroad companies provide considerable source material for that industry as well.

The general historian and sociologist can learn much about life and times in the years covered by the collection. Bills for horseshoeing give way to bills for automobile repairs, for instance; gas and electricity and the telephone make their appearance in the files; the effect of World War I is felt on shipping and industry.

The Kent historian will discern in the record the changing face of the town. New businesses and industries arrive and some very early ones survive, even to the present day. Brady Lake began as a summer cottage resort. The Parsons Lumber Company contributes to "a fund for securing the location of the Northeastern Ohio Normal School [now Kent State University] at Kent" (see box four, folder six). The names of Kent townspeople can be found throughout the financial records, day books and ledgers of the Parsons Lumber Company. An architectural historian or private homeowner may even be able to trace the construction of a particular house in Kent, especially if he knows the names of builder and owner and the date of the construction.

The Parsons Lumber Company collection is, in fact, an excellent example of the way in which the records of one family owned firm, if meticulously kept and left for posterity, can provide future researchers with a window on the past. In the accumulation of so many mundane items from the daily record of a time gone by, history comes alive, and once again the T. G. Parsons Lumber Company opens its doors to business!
