Biography

Sidney L. Jackson was born on September 13, 1914, in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Jackson spent his childhood in Mt. Vernon, New York, where he graduated from high school. As stated in A Biographical Directory of Librarians in the United States and Canada, 5th edition, page 533, Dr. Jackson attended Columbia University from 1931 to 1935, receiving his A.B. in History. He then continued his education at the Columbia Univeristy Teachers College from 1935 to 1936 when he received his M.A. in the Teaching of History. From 1936 to 1941 Dr. Jackson completed his Ph.D. in the History of American Education. During World War II he served in the United States Army Signal Corps, attaining the rank of captain, and at the end of the war was stationed in the Philippines. On August 26, 1944, Dr. Jackson married Clara Ostrowsky. After leaving the Army, Dr. Jackson, from 1946 to 1948, was a free lance research writer, working for organizations and individuals such as the United Nations and Benjamin Sonnenbert. Between 1948 and 1949 he worked as an Associate Historian for the American National Red Cross and in 1949 worked for the Buffalo Jewish Anti-Defamation League. In 1950 he became a cataloger at the Brooklyn Public Library and he remained there until coming to Kent State University as an Associate Professor of Library Science in January, 1959. In 1965 Dr. Jackson was promoted to the rank of Professor of Library Science and remained at that position until his death on May 8, 1979.

While at Kent State University Dr. Jackson was editor of the journal Aspects of Librarianship and was active on various committees, the Faculty Senate and in the United Faculty Professional Association. Dr. Jackson belonged to numerous professional, political and interest-group organizations. He was a member of the Library History Round Table of the American Library Association, the Ohio Library Association in which he served as chairman of the Intellectual Freedom Committee in 1964-1965, the Northern Ohio Technical Services Librarians of which he was vice-president in 1965-1966, the National Education Association in which he served on the Higher Education Advisory Council from 1976-1979, the Ohio Education Association, the American Association of University Professors, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peoples in which he served as vice-president of the Kent, Ohio, chapter, the National Association of Railroad Passengers, the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study Citizens Involvement Committee, and , except for a brief period of time when first arriving in Kent, the Communist Party of the United States of America.

Scope and Content

On June 19 and 21, 1979 Professor Clara O, Jackson transferred the papers of Dr. Sidney L. Jackon to the Kent State University Library Archives.

The collection encompasses the period from 1945 to 1979, although the bulk of the materials cover his years from 1959 to 1979. The materials, in his collection have been eigther arranged topically or by subject and then chronologically, where possible. Aside from general correspondence, which contains both with Kent State University and personal letters, all correspondence relating to a certain subject has been left in the subject files. Because of space considerations, only the titles and years of Dr. Jackson's publications have been included, not the full bibliographical citation. Only the years fro the book reviews have been given. All the restricted material, which includes grade books, letters of recommendation and correspondence related to a Faculty Senate Hearing Committee, has been placed in box ten and will remain restricted until the year 2015. Two signatures of prominent individuals can be found in the collection. The autograph of Martin Luther King, Jr., has been removed and placed in the autograph file and a copy of the original was returned to the original position. The autograph of Dwight D. Eisenhower can be found in the certificate folder on Dr. Jackson's M.S. degree from Columbia University. All newspaper clippings except for those that were oversized have been photocopied. Materials pertaining to institutions are arranged first according to whether they pertain to national, state or local activities, and then alphabetically. In addition to curriculum materials, publications, correspondence and committee materials, the collection also contains a paper by Dr. Jackson titled "The Desirability of Nationalization of the Railroads," which won the Bennet Prize at Columbia University in 1935, plus an unfinished history of the United States titled "America's Promise."

Dr. Jackson's papers will prove of interest to researchers in a number of fields as his correspondence reflects his wide ranging interests. The papers would be especially valuable to library science researchers who would find a wealth of material on curriculum and research projects. There is also a series of folders on public transportation, which was of particular interest to Dr. Jackson. Finally, the papers would be of some value to those interested in the history of the United States and of Kent State University, especially the School of Library Science and the Kent State University Affirmative Action Committee.

To assist the research, the general organization of this collection is as follows:

  • Series 1: Correspondence files
  • Series 2: Subject files
  • Series 3: Curriculum materials
  • Series 4: Professional and official activities
  • Series 5: Miscellaneous materials and items
  • Series 6: Cards and letters of condolence following Sidney Jackson's death
  • Series 7: Restricted material

Except for the unfinished history of the United States, "America's Promise," Professor Clara O. Jackson has kindly donated literary rights and copyright, as well as property rights, for this collection to the Kent State University Archives.
