University Libraries 2010 Fall Report: Systems & Technical Services

This report highlights current activity across University Libraries. This information is being shared in advance of the annual fall meeting with Chairs, Directors, and Departmental Library Representatives and will provide background for discussion at the meeting.

In the past year, the University Library's Systems and Technical Services Departments have:

1.  Deployed a mobile version of the University Libraries'  web site.

2.  Migrated our University Libraries' web site search to Google.

3. Implemented the new  University Libraries'  logos throughout all of our web sites and applications. 

4. Maintained our popular public web site ( ) that supported  700,000 sessions and over 1 million page hits last year.

5. Maintained and enhanced KentLINK ( ) our online catalog, which supported 665,00 circulation transactions, 1.2 million user searches, and 365 million record retrievals last year.

6.  Deployed a mobile version of KentLINK, the Libraries' online catalog.

7.  Loaded large files of records for public domain ebooks into KentLINK and (soon) the OhioLINK Central Catalog.

Nearly 500,000 records for public domain ebooks from the Hathi Trust and Project Gutenberg have been loaded into KentLINK.  The Hathi Trust content includes the public domain portion of the Google Books Library Project.  Project Gutenberg is one of the oldest open ebook projects, having begun in 1971.  Soon Kent staff will add all of these records to the OhioLINK Central Catalog for the benefit of all OhioLINK users throughout the state.

8.  Deployed new workflow applications for a variety of projects like scheduling for rooms, seminars, and appointments;  and student budget management.

9.  Continued and enhanced support for the OhioLINK consortium by developing and supporting projects like:

a. Our cataloging software tool for OhioLINK electronic theses and dissertations, now in use throughout the state.

b. Archival finding aid development system for the OhioLINK  EAD (Encoded Archival Description) project, now in use at 44 institutions throughout Ohio.

c. Chairing the OhioLINK Discovery Layer Task Force to provide a new universal search interface for all OhioLINK content.

d. Managing the implementation of the new shared statewide online catalog for the OhioLINK storage facilities.

10.  Completed a project to improve access to KentLINK content through the OCLC WorldCatdatabase.

11.  Supported our continuing aggressive move to electronic content.
