Borrowing Privileges for High School Students

High School Guarantee     Teacher Borrowing    Courtesy Card

Arrangements can be made in advance to allow students in your high school classes to borrow from the Kent State University Library.  Questions relating to borrowing policies and procedures should be addressed to Bob Gray, Circulation Manager, Libraries and Media Services at 330-672-7905.  A full explanation of community borrowing privileges is available on this web site. Three options for borrowing privileges are available to high school students and are described below.

Student Borrowing with High School Guarantee

High schools wishing to arrange for individual students to have borrowing privileges, must submit a list of names and social security numbers of students requiring borrowing privileges at least three weeks prior to the first visit.  The administration must also agree to the following in writing when requesting privileges for the academic year.

  1. Guarantee that the high school will cover the cost of any lost or damaged item by their students ($65 charge for most Kent State University owned items and $115 charge for OhioLINK state wide borrowing program items) if the student fails to return material in a timely manner.
  2. Guarantee that the High School will cover any fines incurred by their students if the student fails to pay in a timely manner.
  3. Designate one contact person (school librarian) to receive email notices relating to pick up, overdue, or fine notices.  This person will then be responsible for contacting the student directly.

Teacher Borrowing on Behalf of the Student

A high school teacher or librarian who already has borrowing privileges, may borrow materials on behalf of his or her students.  The teacher must be present at the circulation desk when the student checks out the material.  The teacher is responsible for any lost material or fines charged to the teacher's patron record.

Student Borrowing through Courtesy Card

Any resident of the state of Ohio who is at least 16 years of age can apply for a courtesy card as a community member by presenting photo identification and by paying a $30.00 annual fee (cash or check). A student who chooses to borrow materials with a courtesy card is responsible for all lost material and overdue fees.

Interlibrary Loan services are available under this arrangement, but do require an additional deposit as well as a charge for each transaction.
