Downloading the Census Data
The initial search for census data must begin with a reliable database. In this case, we are using the United States government website for the Census Bureau. The URL is: http://www.census.gov/. For the purposes of this exercise, select the American FactFinder database from the left column of options.
*Note: the current U. S. and World population clocks in the middle of the right column.
STEP #1: The URL for the American FactFinder: http://factfinder.census.gov/home/saff/main.html?_lang=en. From the left column of options, select the option labeled DATA SETS.
STEP #2: Click the mouse on the third option on this page, which is the Census 2000 Summary File 3 – Sample Data. From that set, choose the Detailed Tables option.
STEP #3: The resulting page allows the user to specify the geographic data that they will need for any particular project, beginning with geographic type. Click on the downward arrow for the entire list of options.
