Biographical Note: Martin Nurmi was a Professor of English at Kent State University from 1955 until his retirement in 1984. He received his doctoral degree in English from the University of Minnesota in 1954. While at Kent, Professor Nurmi also served as chairman of the English department, was a member of the Faculty Senate, serving as its chairman in 1970-71, and also served as the head of the graduate school for four years. He has held visiting professorships at the University of Washington, University of Minnesota, Michigan State University, the University of British Columbia and Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece. He is the author of Blake's Marriage of Heaven and Hell: A Critical Study (1957), A Blake Bibliography (1964), Poetry: An Introduction and Anthology (1967) and William Blake (1975).

Scope and Content: The Martin Nurmi papers include his non-teaching activities in the English Department at Kent State University from 1967 to 1981. These activities center around his work with: the Faculty Senate, the Academic Due Process Subcommittee, the Task Force on Racial Understanding, Commission on the Role and Status of Graduate Student Appointees, Integrated Life Sciences Humanities Requirement Committee, Grievance Committee, and Report of the Committee to Evaluate the Chairperson of the Philosophy Department -- Dickoff. Also included are materials dealing with a conference Nurmi attended entitled: "The Humanities and the Arts of Healing Conference," held at Kent State on October 31 and November 1, 1975.

Perhaps the most significant part of Nurmi's papers is his involvement with two major legal cases that took place from 1974 to 1976. In 1974, he was apppointed to a special four member faculty "Ad Hoc" committee to investigate allegations of unprofessional conduct in the College of Business Administration that concerned the awarding of a Doctorate degree to Andres Bermundez. The second court case centered around a Sexual Descrimination suit filed against the English Department by Joanne Kantrowitz that occurred in 1976.

  • Series 2: Committees and Conference
  • Series 3: Legal Cases: The Andres Bermudez Case
