Historical Note

The American Weave Literary Journal was published from 1945–1964, by Loring E. Williams and Alice Crane Williams from their home at 23728 Glenhill Drive, Cleveland Heights, Ohio 44121.  Printing was performed by Villier’s Publishers Ltd., Ingestre, London NW5 England.  Alice died in 1964, and Loring moved back to Maine.  Editors Alfred B. Cahen, David C. French and James L. Weil continued to publish this collection of poems and light verse until 1971.  Poets from all over submitted their work to American Weave and were paid for works published.   Alice Crane Williams was the Aunt of famed Cleveland area poet Hart Crane.  The journal was partially funded by the Hart Crane Memorial Fund and the Alice Crane Williams Memorial Fund.  Final address for the publication offices was 4109 Bushnell Road, University Heights, Ohio 44118.  Local poets from the Cleveland Poetry Society at Fenn College (now Cleveland State University) were frequent submitters to  American Weave.  The journal had agreements with several other poetry publications for sharing works.

Scope and Content

This collection contains the rough drafts, printer’s copies, formatting notes, galleys, correspondence relating to submissions, payments, subscriptions, and editors notes, and business matters dealing with the publication such as legal documents. Included in the collection are Volumes 29, No. 2 December 1965 through Volume 33 in 1971.  Volumes 29-32 were published in June and December of each year.  Published copies of American Weave are not included in this archival collection, however a journal run can be found in the Special Collections periodicals .

Poets would submit their work and correspond by mail to the editors.  They were paid for works published and asked to give a short biographical sketch for the journal.  American Weave Volume 31, Number 1, was dedicated to Hart Crane, and the likeness of his book plate was featured on the cover. Included in Volume 30, Number 2, was a previously undiscovered  poem Hart Crane wrote as a child to his Aunt Alice Crane Williams.
