Biography of Spelman and Hinds family
Rootstown native, Marcus Burt Spelman (1877-1956) married lifelong Kent resident, Jessie Hinds (1877-1964) on March 16, 1905. Throughout their over fifty years of marriage, Burt and Jessie had two daughters, Comfort Carrie Martin and Marian Elizabeth Dalton, followed by several grandchildren. After settling in Kent, the Spelman family became known as prominent community members and Kent business leaders. Burt was the Director and Vice President of the Kent National Bank as well as the Vice President of the County Savings & Loan, Co. in Ravenna. He was heavily involved in the Spelman ice business at Brady Lake, committed member of the Kent Rotary Club along with the Kent Masonic Order. Jessie, who was a descendant of one of Kent's earliest families, was a member of the Olive Chapter No. 53, Order of Eastern Star and was also an inspector of knitting for the Red Cross during WWI. Both Burt and Jessie were devoted members of the First Congregational Church as well as avid supporters and advisers for the Boy and Girl Scouts.
Scope and Content
The materials in this collection span from 1833 to 1973. This collection contains a large amount of correspondence, documents, personal writings, news clippings, photographs and photo albums. This collection contains several items pertaining to the Hinds and Spelman families prior to, during, and after the marriage of Marcus Burt Spelman and Jessie Hinds Spelman. This collection also contains items with historical significance to the cities of Kent and Rootstown along with surrounding cities in Portage County.

This collection is arranged predominantly in chronological order with the exception of some publications and photographs. The items that are not arranged chronologically are instead arranged alphabetically. The Spelman and Hinds family papers are divided into series as follows:
