History of Varsity
The Varsity "K" Club was founded in 1927 by KSU athletic director Merle Wagoner, coaches Eugene Feeley and August Peterka, and the football squad of that year. One of the primary functions of Varsity "K" Club at the time was to host an event called "High School Day" to entice prominent high school athletes to attend Kent State Normal College, as it was known at the time.
In 1979 the Kent State University Varsity "K" Athletics Hall of Fame was established to honor men and women whose exceptional athletic performance merits special recognition from their alma mater.
Scope and Content
This collection follows the Varsity "K" Club from its first inception as the "K" Men's Club of Kent State Normal College up through its establishment as the co-ed Varsity "K" Club of Kent State University today. The collection includes administrative records, correspondence, newsclippings, publications, and photographs of the Varsity "K" Club, the Kent State University Varsity "K" Hall of Fame, and prominent KSU athletes and sporting events.
In this collection there is an oversized materials series, including five sub-series of artifacts, artwork, photographs, and scrapbooks found in boxes 4-10.
