CIES records: Series 2: Secretariat Records

Scope and Content: Since the Comparative and International Education Society was founded in 1956, (originally as the Comparative Education Society) its Secretariat has been responsible for carrying out the general operation of the organization as prescribed by the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. These duties include but are not limited to the collection and approval of meeting minutes from conventions of various CIES committees, the publishing of a CIES newsletter, serve as a permanent repository for CIES records not otherwise entrusted to the Treasurer or Archive, and the publication of a CIES membership directory. Throughout the subseries below documents and materials relating to all of these activities are represented, and these holdings will continue to grow as accessions continue to come in and CIES updates its archival collection.

Subseries 2: CES and CIES Newsletters

Scope and Content: Although this organization began as the Comparative Education Society, through a vote of the membership the name was changed to Comparative and International Education Society in December, 1968. You will notice that the title of their newsletter reflects this change. Also, beginning in June 1967 and published periodically throughout the newsletters run, a membership directory was included with the newsletter. In 1989 this grew into its own publication with the appearance of the 1989 - 1990 CIES Membership Directory. These individual membership directories are listed as a separate subseries below.

Scope and Content: The CIES Membership Directories pick up as a separate publication after August 1987, when the directory was included within the CIES Newsletter for the last time. As a stand alone publication the membership directories are grouped two years at a time in the beginning, and the transition to a single year in 1998.

Subseries 6: CIES Secretariat Correspondence

Scope and Content: The CIES Secretariat has been responsible for a surprisingly large range of duties since the establishing of the organization in 1956. According to the CIES Constitution and Bylaws, the Secretary shall: "See that minutes of the Society’s meetings and of its Board of Directors and Executive Committee are kept and, when approved, made a part of its permanent records; Coordinate information on regional meetings authorized to be held under Society auspices; Compile, edit, and publish a newsletter and issue it to the members; Be responsible for the Society Web Site and other electronic communication forums; Prepare and disseminate the biennial membership directory; Serve as Society liaison in connection with information dissemination networks; Prepare the call to the Annual Meeting; Receive sealed ballots by the date specified on the ballot, and present them to the tellers for tally during the Annual Meeting; Receive and tabulate returns on any special poll authorized by the Board of Directors, or the Executive Committee, and share the results of the survey with the Board; Serve as custodian of records of the Society at the Secretariat other than those entrusted to the Treasurer and to the Archive under the supervision of the Historian; and Perform other duties consistent with the office." This subseries is composed of correspondence to and from the Secretariat relating to the duties outlined above.
