Title: University Libraries Safety Aide
Compensation: $9.70 hourly, for a maximum of 28 hours per week.
Shifts available:
11-3, 6-10 Monday - Thurs; 11-3 Friday; 11-3 Saturday; 6-10 Sunday. Expectation is to work a minimum of 12 hours/week, including one evening or weekend shift.
Position Description:
Aides assist in maintaining safety and compliance with the Flashes Safe Eight protocols in the University Library Building, by circulating throughout the public areas of the Library to maintain an orderly atmosphere conducive to a safe and pleasant library experience; sustaining an outstanding rapport with the public; and performing related duties as required.
Essential Duties:
- Enforce and administer university and library policies, rules and safety regulations, including the Flashes Safe Eight protocols, through verbal and/or written warnings
- Perform hourly rounds of the University Library facility (basement - 12th floors)
- Treat people fairly, equitably and with courtesy and respect
- Analyze inappropriate and difficult situations quickly and objectively
- Deal with disruptive users according to policy and training procedures; report unruly persons and more serious offenders to Kent State University Police when necessary
- Survey facilities for problems of safety and hazardous/dangerous conditions and report to the appropriate staff
- Assist in emergency situations
- Give directions; refer questions about library services to appropriate library staff
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Attend required staff training and meetings
- Use computer and internet with confidence to communicate, find and review information
- Perform other duties as assigned, which may include troubleshooting copiers, reader/printers, computers, set up and take down for programs, check belongings when security alarm sounds, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to understand and enforce University and University Library policies, rules and safety procedures
- Ability to work well with staff and public
- Ability to interact with a diverse population
- Ability to work with minimum supervision
- Ability to act calmly and with composure in difficult situations
- Demonstrated leadership and/or ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- 18 years or older; part-time or full-time student status at Kent State University.
- Not on sanction from the Office of Student Conduct.
