    Historical Note: Truth Is Fallen was commissioned by the Midland Symphony Orchestra for the dedication of the Midland Center for the Arts in Midland, Michigan. "The music is dedicated to the slain students of Kent University and Mississippi [ie. Jackson] State, and all other innocent victims caught in the cross-fire between repression and rebellion" (from the liner notes by Dave Brubeck). CD issue of 2 LP recordings originally released in 1972 and 1974, respectively.

    Scope and Content: No recording on file. Program and other information about the performance is included in this file. Also included is a published score (four-part chorus of mixed voices with piano accompaniment, G. Schirmer), in the same edition as was used in the performance in Kent, Ohio.
    Acquisition Note: The score was donated in 2019 by Tom Cooperrider, who participated in the June 3, 1970 Kent, Ohio, performance.

    Historical Note: In Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye (page 140), there is mention of how the Kent State shootings and other events related to the Vietnam War, social upheaval, and cultural changes affected Gaye's thinking and creative process during the time before he started working on What's Going On. Sandor Lubisch in his letter accompanying this donation asserts that this album was highly significant and influential within the culture and social movements of this era.
