Finding Aid

Prepared by Stephanie Wachalec, March, 27, 2002; Last updated August 2023

Inclusive Dates: 1967-1998
Extent: 4.5 cubic feet (4 record storage boxes + 1 slim document case + oversized folders)
Physical Location: 12th floor

Biographical Note: Bob "Carp" Carpenter was born in Coshocton, Ohio, September 3, 1943. After graduating from Akron's North High School in 1961, he served in the U.S.A.F. as an intelligence analyst working for National Security Agency from 1963-67. During this time, Carpenter was stationed mostly overseas: 18 months in Crete, Greece and twice in Vietnam (Da Nang and Saigon). Upon his discharge he became News Director, DJ, and Talk Show Host for WKSU-AM/FM (campus stations) in Kent, Ohio.

From 1969-74, Carpenter was News Director at WKNT-AM/FM (commercial stations) in Kent. It was during that time when student anti-war protests were prevalent across college campuses. As News Director, Carpenter often covered these protests, tape recorder in hand, to capture the events. He made the only known recording of Governor Rhodes' press conference at the City of Kent Fire Station on Sunday May 3, 1970, although, this recording is often rebroadcast without credit given to the original source. He continued to collect information about the events of May 4, 1970 until he moved to Maui, Hawaii in 1974. He now lives in Port Charlotte, Florida, and was the Public Information Officer for the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office from 2003 until his retirement in 2013.

Scope and Content: This collection includes articles, newspaper clippings, subject files, and artifacts related to the events before, during, and shortly after May 4, 1970. Newspaper clippings, flyers and original WKNT news copy make up much of the collection. Also found in the collection are original audio recordings of the burning of the R.O.T.C. building, the arrival of the Ohio National Guard on campus, Governor Rhodes' speech of May 3, 1970, and other events on and around campus on the weekend before May 4. The recordings of May 4 include the rally and the shots being fired, as well as some interviews immediately following the shootings, as well as events later in 1970 and in 1971. The bulk of the collection dates from 1968-1974.

Arrangement: The collection is organized into the following series.

Restrictions on Access: Some information included in this collection is restricted due to the presence of information protected by privacy laws. This information has been redacted where present on documents in the collection. Un-redacted originals, in all cases, have been retained by Special Collections and Archives.
