Transition Plan for Closing of the Chemistry/Physics Library

Transition Plan for Closing of the Chemistry/Physics Library

Renovations of Williams Hall starting in late summer 2012 required the closing of the Chemistry/Physics Library. The space was vacated on Friday, June 29.

Below you will find information for collections, computer workstations, course reserves, interlibrary loan/document delivery, the website, staff.

1.      Collections:

a.      Print journals: Current issues will be interfiled alphabetically on the 5th and 6th floors, University Library, joining the bound journals which were moved there in 2011. We are converting most of these 51 subscriptions to online only beginning in January 2013. Those remaining as paper subscriptions are those not offered online.

To obtain a copy of any article in a print journal, submit your request through the online Interlibrary Loan system (ILLiad), and it will be scanned and sent to you electronically.

b.      Books: approximately 7,000 of the most current and actively used books will be interfiled on the 7th floor, University Library. Remainder of the collection will be placed in storage and will be available through online requesting.

To obtain any available book, use the "Request" feature in KentLINK. You can request delivery to a Kent campus office or dorm.

c.      Reference books: the most frequently referred to reference books will be interfiled in the 1st floor reference collection, University Library.

2.      Computer workstations with stand-alone products (including ChemDraw, LiqCryst) are now in a defined area in the Reference Center, 1st floor, University Library.

3.      Course reserve materials are available to students through the University Library circulation desk. Processing of materials to be placed on reserve for upcoming semesters will be handled through the Reserve Services office (180 Library, x.27906).

4.      Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery requests should be placed online through Illiad, the Libraries' interlibrary loan system -- https://kent.illiad.oclc.org/illiad/logon.html . This includes requests for electronic delivery of scanned articles from the Libraries' print journal collection.

5.      The Chemistry/Physics Library website will be changed significantly prior to fall semester --both to reflect the closing of the Chemistry/Physics Library and to migrate to the University Libraries' new website platform.

6.      Staffing:

a.      With the passing of Erica Lilly, the position of subject librarian for Chemistry, Physics, and Liquid Crystals is temporarily being filled by Ken Burhanna (kburhann@kent.edu, x.21660), who will be the contact for instruction or reference requests; and Melissa Spohn (mspohn@kent.edu, x.21682), who will be the contact for any collection questions.

b.      Rochelle Gray begins a new assignment in Library Collection Management. We greatly appreciate her contributions over these past months and during this transition.
