Biographical Note: Robert C. Gaede was born in Cleveland Heights on November 6, 1920. Gaede earned his bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Michigan in 1947, during which time he served in the United States Air Force for almost four years. After graduation, Gaede returned to Cleveland where he was employed at the architectural firm of Garfield, Harris, Robinson and Schafer. He then turned his efforts to teaching and applied for a position at Kent State University.

His appointment at Kent State began in 1948 as Instructor of Industrial Arts. After a short re-enlistment period with the Air Force in 1952, Gaede was promoted to Assistant Professor of Architecture. His papers reflect his contribution to the early beginnings of the School of Architecture as well as Gaede's own research interests in the field. During his time at Kent, Gaede also formed a Kent City Planning Committee. Gaede was called back into service for the Air Force in the early 1950's, and later moved to Cleveland. He is the author of a few regional books on architecture, such as Guide to Cleveland architecture and Project--Preservation Cleveland: an historic and comparative analysis.

Scope and Content: Gaede's papers include his personal notebooks, class notes, newspaper clippings and correspondence from the years in which he taught at Kent State. Also included are papers reflecting his involvement in the early stages of creating the Kent Planning Committee. The notes included in this collection range from project and class plans to more minor notes on miscellaneous issues.
