Online Skills Modules | Sixty Minute Seminars | Advanced English Courses

The library offers two options for information literacy (research skills) instruction for students enrolled in the English 11001, 11011, and 21011 courses.

Library Skills Modules

Library skills modules provide an option for students to learn basic research and library skills at their own pace on their own time. The modules can be assigned by instructors as a course requirement, allowing student usage to be tracked and reported back to the instructor.

The modules include:

  • Module 1: Developing a Search Strategy: Tips and Tricks
  • Module 2: KentLINK Part 1 -- Searching for Books by Topic
  • Module 3: KentLINK Part 2 -- Finding Books on the Shelf
  • Module 4: Research Databases Part 1 -- Searching for Articles by Topic
  • Module 5: Research Databases Part 2 -- Locating Full Text Journal Articles
  • Module 6: Evaluating Information on the Web

60+ Minute Seminar: Getting Started

The library now offers one seminar targeted at students beginning the library research process. Vouchers verifying proof of attendance are provided to students attending. The seminar is offered on multiple days and times throughout the first half of the semester. All sessions are held in Room 333 of the Main Library.

Getting Started: Tips for Researching College Papers

This seminar highlights resources that students need to get started on college level research. The library's Web site, online catalog (KentLINK), and the Academic Search Complete database are featured. Students receive hands-on practice during the session.

Advanced English Instruction

Individualized Course Instruction

Specialized library instruction for courses at the 20000 level and higher is available. The goal of this service is to tailor research guidance to the topics specifically covered in courses. Please contact Tammy Voelker, liaison librarian for English to schedule class instruction.

PErsonalized Research Consultations (PERCs)

Students needing individualized assistance with a research paper may make a PERC appointment with a librarian by stopping by the Reference Dek on the first floor of the library or by calling 672-3150.

Students in upper level or graduate courses also have the option to set up a research consultation by appointment with Tammy Voelker, the liaison librarian for English.
