Web Directories/Indexes

Web directories allow you to browse hierarchical categories of information arranged by subject.

Use when:

  • you need an initial starting place
  • you have a broad topic you need to narrow
  • you are looking current events or topics in the news
  • as a complement to other forms of research

When not to use:

  • if you already know the url of where you are going
  • to replace other forms of research

Be aware that:

  • Not every index/directory covers the same sites; you may need to use more than one to get comprehensive information about your topic
  • Unless specifically stated, you have no way of knowing whether the included sites have been evaluated for quality
  • There is no consistency in subject categories between the different indexes
