Narrator Barrett, Bill
Narrator's Role Employee of Kent State University in 1970
Date of Interview 2000-05-04
Description Bill Barrett was the Alumni Publications Editor at Kent State University in 1970 and he relates his memories of May 4, 1970, the day the shootings took place on campus. He explains that he was working as an observer for the University News and Information Office that day, and that his job was to be present at the protest rally and make general observations about what he saw. In this eyewitness account, he describes the movements of the National Guard troops in detail from the perspective of his position on the hill near Stopher Hall and later closer to Johnson Hall. He was 25 yards away when the shots were fired. He also gives a detailed description of a series of events that started with Barrett noticing a man in the crowd, a photographer, who had a gun, and ended with Barrett and another man chasing the man with the gun and turning him in to the University Police. He identifies the man--Terry Norman--and discusses giving his statement to the police about the incident. He concludes by discussing his experiences in his role as editor of Alumni Publications during the aftermath of the shootings.
