Scope and Content

The International Brotherhood of Pottery and Allied Workers' Headquarters is located in East Liverpool, Ohio. A West Coast branch office is maintained in Huntington Park, California, and an Eastern branch office is maintained in Trenton, New Jersey. The materials in this segment of the IBPAW collection document the organizational activites of these three union offices, especially those of the International Headquarters, and their multi-faceted involvements with non-union institutions during the years since the Brotherhood's formation.

The materials are divided into three groups according to the office of origin. The first segment is the Headquarters; the second is the West Coast branch office, while the third portion consists of materials from the Eastern branch office. Materials in the first group are arranged into categories by types of materials. Included in these categories are constitutions, general correspondence, executive board files, officers' files, committee records, financial records, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous printed materials. While constitutions and general correspondence are arranged chronologically, and newspaper clippings and miscellaneous printed materials have been arranged similarly when possible, the remaining categories have merited a different treatment due to the nature and vulk of the materials therein. For example, within the main category designated "Executive Board files," materials are arranged topically beginning with Executive Board correspondence. Materials designated as "Financial records" are arranged beginning with financial correspondence.

In addition, the officers' files are arranged first chronologically according to the date of each officer's tenure in office. For example, the files of Frank Hull, who served from 1953 to 1956, are followed by those of Edwin Wheatley, who served from 1956 to 1969. Materials within each of the officer's files are arranged by type, beginning with correspondence. However, subject files also exist within the Headquarters body of materials. There are nineteen such categories, which follow an alphabetical arrangement. For example, materials in the ninth subject group, entitled "Maritime Trades department," are followed by materials in the tenth subject group, entitled "National Labor Relations board." Within each of the nineteen subject groups, materials are arranged by type beginning with the correspondence pertaining to the subject group undere whose heading it appears. Moreover, the committee records, the last mojor area warranting special treatment, are arranged alphabetically by the committee's name. For example, the records of the "Cinaware Committee" are followed by the records of the "Decorating Committee." Within each of the nine committee record groups, materials are arranged by type beginning with correspondence of the particular group in question. Materials in the second and third portions of the Headquarters segment of the IBPAW collection, which respectively relate to the West Coast Branch office and the eastern Branch office, are arranged by type of material. They also begin with correspondence.
