Abstract: The Great Lakes Theater (GLT) records contain the working files of the Great Lakes Theater (originally the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival, then Great Lakes Theater Festival [GLTF]) which was founded 1962 in Lakewood, Ohio. The papers include daily operational and financial records of the organization and Board of Trustee and committee records. The collection also includes records of past theatrical productions, as well as the activities of various departments including box office, education, development and marketing.

Historical Note: The Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival was founded in Lakewood, Ohio, in 1962 through an arrangement between Lakewood Board of Education President Dorothy Teare and Arthur Lithgow, Artistic Director of a troupe of Shakespearean performers originally founded at Antioch College during the 1950s. In 1982, the Festival moved from Lakewood, to Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland. Although rooted in the production of Shakespeare plays, this regional professional theater expanded its repertoire to include classics, which was reflected in a name change to Great Lakes Theater Festival, in 1985. The group has had several Artistic Directors, including Arthur Lithgow (1962-1966), Lawrence Carra (1966-1975), Vincent Dowling (1975-1985), Gerald Freedman (1985-1998), James Bundy (1998-2002) and Charles Fee, who accepted the position in 2002. In 2011, Great Lakes Theater dropped the “Festival” from its name. For additional historical information on Great Lakes Theater, see their "About" Web page.

Scope and Content: The Great Lakes Theater records include the daily operational and financial records of the theater, as well as Board of Trustee and committee records. The collection also includes promotional materials and working files for past theatrical productions, as well as files documenting the activities of various departments, including box office, education, development, and marketing. Physical materials include board and committee minutes, working files, financial records, promotional material, article and newspaper clippings, event files, photographs, posters, audio-visual material and artifacts.

Arrangement: The collection is arranged into the following series.

Preferred Citation: The Great Lakes Theater records. Kent State University Libraries. Special Collections and Archives.

Related Material: Researchers should also consult the papers of past GLT artistic directors Arthur Lithgow and Vincent Dowling, which are housed in the Department of Special Collections and Archives and contain some material related to GLT.

Acquisition Information: The Great Lakes Theater records were first given to the Department of Special Collections and Archives of Kent State University on November 20, 1992 by the Board of the Festival.

Accruals: Additional materials are added to the collection on an ongoing basis.

Technical Requirements: Some audio recordings on reel-to-reel tape and some video recordings in Betamax, VHS and large format film will require special equipment for playback or reformatting.
