Abstract: This collection contain periodical clippings, dating from 1926 to the 1980s, regarding Queen Marie and the activities of the Romanian royal family collected by Mary Popa.


Biography or History: During Queen Marie of Romania's visit to the United States in 1926, Mary Popa, then 10 years old, was one of two children to present a bouquet of flowers to Queen Marie on behalf of the Romanian community in Omaha, Nebraska. The visit sparked Popa's interest and she then began collecting periodical clippings regarding Queen Marie and her family. The collection was donated by Mary Popa's sister, Helen Popa in 2007.


Scope and Content: The collection includes periodical clippings dating from 1926 to the 1980s regarding Queen Marie and members of the Romanian royal family. The material was collected by Mary Popa, of Omaha, Nebraska, who met Queen Marie in 1926. The collection includes periodical clippings in English and occasionally in Romanian. The collection also includes a copy of letter written to Nicolae Popa, Mary Popa's father, on behalf of Queen Marie.


Statement of Arrangement: The collection is divided into folders by subject. Subjects include the letter to Nicolae Popa on behalf of Queen Marie and periodical clippings on Queen Marie's visit to Omaha, Nebraska; Queen Marie; Princess Ileana; King Carol II; Prince Nicholas; and King Michael.

Acquisition Information: The Mary Popa Romanian royal family collection was created by Mary Popa and donated by Mary's sister, Helen Popa to the Kent State University Special Collection in 2007.


Photocopies of all periodical clippings have been made for research purposes. Researches should handle photocopies rather than original materials whenever possible.
