Biography of Hallock F. Raup

Born in Pennsylvania in 1901, Hallock Raup moved to California as a young man and earned his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He taught at several colleges and universities including the University of California at Los Angeles and at Eastern Washington University at Cheney. From 1943 to 1945 Raup served on the Board of Geographic Names in Washington, D.C. Raup came to Kent State University in 1945 to head the Geography department. He served as department chair until 1963. Raup retired from teaching in 1971, but continued to be active in a number of area service agencies including the Kent Hunger Task Force and Kent Social Services. During the last decade of his life he maintained an epistolary friendship with John B. Nicholson, former director of the Kent State University Libraries. Raup was married with two children. He died in 1985.

Scope and Content

The Hallock Raup papers cover the period 1917 to 1986 and include personal correspondence, professional research and writing, subject files and a small collection of early 20th century glass lantern slides. The personal correspondence includes letters from Raup to his parents (1917-1950) and a large collection of letters from his friend John B. Nicholson, former director of the Kent State University Libraries, to Raup (1975-1985). The papers also include a number of published geography articles, monographs and books chapters by Raup along with some of the corresponding research and manuscripts. Notably, Raup worked on the text of an unpublished book on local photographer, Arthur Trory. The glass lantern slides date from the early 1900s to the early 1950s and were likely used in teaching. Some were professionally produced for sale and some would have been made by Raup himself to accompany presentations.
