Abstract: Carol A. Cartwright served as President of Kent State University from 1991 to 2006, and this collection represents the working files of the office of the Kent State University President during this period. Material in this collection includes inaugural documents, correspondence and subject files, speeches, State of the University addresses, and awards and plaques given the University and to Cartwright. Cartwright maintained an active schedule, and this may be seen in the extent of the speech and activity files.

Biography of Carol A. Cartwright: Carol A. Cartwright was born in 1941. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and her master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. As an academic administrator Cartwright served as the Dean for Undergraduate Programs and Vice Provost at Pennsylvania State University and as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of California at Davis. She has also held leadership roles in a number of national organizations. She chaired the Board of Directors of the American Association for Higher Education and served on the boards of the American Council on Education, the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, the American Association of Colleges and Universities and National Public Radio. She served on the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. She has also served on the board of a number of private companies.

In 1991 Cartwright became the tenth President of Kent State University and the first female president of that institution, as well as the first female president of a state university in Ohio. Cartwright served as KSU's president from March 1991 to July of 2006. In July 2008 she became Interim President of Bowling Green State University and was appointed president on January 2009. She retired from Bowling Green State University on June 2011. She is married to G. Phillip Cartwright and they have three children.


Scope and Content: This collection represents the working files of the office of Kent State University President Carol A. Cartwright from 1991 through 2006 and includes inaugural materials, chronological and subject files, speeches, State of the University addresses, and awards and plaques given the University and to Cartwright during this period. Other collection materials include the Pew Roundtable files, as Kent State University was an active Pew Higher Education Roundtable Pilot Project participant from circa 1993 to 1998.
