Extended Biography: Albert Borowitz was a collector, scholar and author in the field of true crime literature. He was born, June 27th, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. Borowitz began collecting at the age of twelve when he asked his father, prominent book collector David Borowitz, to buy an edition of the complete Sherlock Holmes stories for him. Arising from their shared interest, the fiction of Arthur Conan Doyle is now one of the important components of the Borowitz Collection at Kent State University. Borowitz attended Milton Academy as a young man, and graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in classics, an M.A. in Chinese regional studies, and a J.D.

Albert Borowitz was the author of numerous books and articles on true crime, including Innocence and Arsenic: Studies in Crime and Literature (1977), A Gallery of Sinister Perspectives: Ten Crimes and a Scandal (1982), The Thurtell-Hunt Murder Case: Dark Mirror to Regency England (1987), The Woman Who Murdered Black Satin: The Bermondsey Horror (1989), Unhappy Endings (2001), Terrorism for Self-Glorification: The Herostratos Syndrome (2005), Crimes Gone By: Collected Essays of Albert Borowitz, 1966-2005 (2006), Lamech, the Second Biblical Killer: A Song with Variations (2007) and Musical Mysteries: From Mozart to John Lennon (2010). Borowitz's fictional writing includes The Jack the Ripper Walking Tour Murder (1986), This Club Frowns on Murder (1990), The Beautiful Red Danube (e-published) and Death Play (e-published). Albert Borowitz's book, Blood & Ink: An International Guide to Fact-Based Crime Literature (2002) is an annotated bibliography of true-crime literature in the Western tradition. He coined the now commonly-used phrase, "psychological kidnapping," in his article "Psychological Kidnapping in Italy: the Case of Aldo Braibanti" in the American Bar Association Journal (October 1971). Borowitz won the Cleveland Arts Prize for Literature in 1981 and was a nominee for the 2003 Mystery Writers of America, Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Fact Based Crime for his work on Blood & Ink.

Borowitz married Helen Osterman in 1950 and they had three children. He also collaborated with Helen on book projects, including Pawnshop and Palaces: the Fall and Rise of the Campana Art Museum (1991). He retired as a partner of the international law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue and he wrote a history of the firm, Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue: The First Century (1993). Borowitz died on January 28, 2023, at the age of 92.

Helen Osterman Borowitz (1929-2012), an art historian, was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Radcliffe College and of Case Western Reserve University. She was formerly associate curator of the Department of Art History and Education at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Her articles have appeared in Art Journal, Criticism, Gazette des Beaux-Arts, and Modern Fiction Studies, among others. She is the author of several books, including The Impact of Art on French Literature: from Scudéry to Proust (1985). She died on July 7, 2012.
